¡Ya hay fechas para la Feria del Libro 2014!

El próximo día 10 de junio de 2014, Fernando Martínez Periset estará firmando en el Parque del Retiro de 18:30 a 20:00 con la librería "El Dragón Lector".
El Dragón Lector ya nos ayudó el año pasado dejándonos estar en la caseta 121. Agradecemos mucho a los que nos fueron a ver aquel día y a la librería. ¡Este año repetimos pero en la caseta 63!
Fernando Periset no sólo llevará a "Captain Hathaway", que en unos meses cumplirá 3 años, también varios ejemplares de "Relatos breves de Ciencia Ficción - Premios Anacronópete", el concurso literario que ganó en octubre, junto con otros 22 escritores.
¡Gracias y les esperamos el 10 en el Retiro en la caseta 63! ;)

En honor a Gabriel García Márquez

Le hemos visto reír en los momentos más difíciles, dar palabras de ánimo y modestia. Le hemos visto llorar en momentos en los que a nadie le quedaban fuerzas para llorar. Vimos cómo sus lágrimas se convertían en palabras y esas palabras inundaban los corazones de millones de lectores, ahora, después de 87 años de sorpresas y novedades literarias, Gabo ha muerto víctima de un cáncer.
Siempre recordaré cómo las letras y las palabras y los párrafos y las páginas de "Relato de un náufrago" y el inspirador comienzo de "Cien años de soledad" se reflejaban en mis gafas, en mis pupilas y en mis latidos.
Lo que más me llama la atención de este autor es que murió a pocos días del Día del Libro, víctima de la legendaria "Maldición de Abril" como me comentaron en su momento en Stratford-Upon-Avon, pueblo natal del gran William Shakespeare.
Gabriel García Márquez, ya fueras Nobel o noble o Gabo, te seguiremos queriendo en Macondo, pues allí podemos estar todos si lo deseamos de verdad.
Te echaremos de menos.

Presentación de los Premios Anacronópete

El día 17 de enero de 2014, para comenzar el año con buen pie, Jesús Centenera, director de la Editorial Quinquerreme, convocó a Fernando Martínez Periset y a Juan Carlos, otro joven autor, para una presentación en la librería Alejandría de Pozuelo, como los dos ganadores más jóvenes de la Primera Edición en los Premios Anacronópete de Ciencia Ficción.
Tras una breve charla por parte de los tres hablantes (Jesús, Fernando y Juan Carlos) en la que discutieron temas como la inspiración y la importancia de la Ciencia Ficción en la literatura.
A continuación, se hizo un debate entre todos los participantes sobre este subgénero literario.
La colección de relatos ya se puede encontrar en librerías como Alejandría (c/Alamansa, 2), colaboradora con la editorial Quinquerreme y con "Captain Hathaway", y la cadena Generación X, que consta de 18 tiendas en España.

The Language of "Captain Hathaway"

By the way, if you really want to "Keep up to date with your English", Check deborahpowell.blogspot.com. Deborah Powell is an old teacher of mine! I do recommend her blog, guys.
Any way (the wind blows!), if you have your copy of "Captain Hathaway" with you, in page 77, you can notice that the word "sorceresses", this word comes from the French sorcière, that means witch and that's exactly what it means in that part of "Captain Hathaway".
If you were to go to page 19, you'll see that the verb "to get rid of" appears. This is an expression used to say that you eliminate something, you won't need it anymore, you end, remove or cast something away.
Then, if you look at page 47, you can see the words "bounty hunters". If someone is a bounty hunter, he/she is a mercenary or a murderer who earns money killing. In this part of the novel, some bounty hunters are hired to kill Captain Hathaway, will they be able to?
One of the contrasts in "Captain Hathaway" is the rudimentary way of living the tribes in chapter 17 have against the unhonourable way of living the pirates have and we can see that contrast when, in page 71, the natives of the island call the pirate crew "the white skinned men", reflecting their simplicity against the pirates' indifference towards that very comment.

Fernando Martínez Periset and Gabriela Sáez from Young Learners Madrid Resources Centre Many students at Madrid Young Learners Centre produce outstanding work, but few manage to complete (and publish!) an English-language novel at the age of 13 which is what Fernando Martínez Periset, one of our Summer Course students, has done. Fernando recently told us about the experience of writing his first book, Captain Hathaway, a pirate tale full of adventure: ‘I first started learning English when I was about four, but when I came to St. Michael’s School, I realized that I knew nothing because my classmates had learnt English for even longer. I discovered that I loved English so I went to the British Council and attended two intensive skills courses during the summer. I really enjoyed them and they were very useful for me although they were hard. Last summer I did another one. I took my teacher Jan a piece of Captain Hathaway. She liked it and thanks to her motivation I finished my book. The British Council courses helped me improve my grammar a lot.’   The story takes place in the 16th century. It includes powerful pirate ships, like The Doomed, a legendary treasure kept by cannibals on an undiscovered island, a mysterious map hidden in an unimaginable place, dark secrets from the past, a magical weapon and, of course, love. Anne Hathaway, the main character, must avenge her father. Will she be able to do it? We wish Fernando all the best with this first adventure and look forward to his second book World of Muh.      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------      Muchos de nuestros estudiantes del centro de Madrid Young Learners hacen un trabajo excelente pero pocos han escrito (¡y publicado!) una novela en inglés a los 13 años, que es lo que Fernando Martínez Periset, uno de nuestros estudiantes de los cursos de verano, ha hecho.   Fernando nos hablaba hace poco de la experiencia de escribir su primer libro, Capitán Hathaway, una historia de piratas llena de aventuras: "Empecé a estudiar cuando tenía unos cuatro años, pero cuando llegué al colegio de St. Michael’s, me di cuenta de que no sabía nada porque mis compañeros de clase habían estudiado inglés durante más tiempo.
